Kris Manning, 33, was born and raised in Dallas, TX. Just like a true Texan, he was raised on good BBQ. One of his very first jobs was rolling potatoes in the very business he now owns, Smokey Joe’s BBQ. In 2014, his father gave him the opportunity to take over the family business. What he thought was just going to be a stepping stone turned into a life long legacy. Throughout the years, Kris was able to get knowledge not only from his father and his father’s former partner, Joe, but from some prodigious mentors as well such as Daniel Vaughn, Cade Mercer, Reid guess and others. With all of this support, his dedication and most importantly his hard work, he transformed Smokey Joe’s BBQ in every way. The walk up window was replaced with a sit down restaurant, the brick pits were replaced with 1000 gallon smokers, the brisket technique was tweaked so now the brisket just melts in your mouth, and the outreach expanded so not only is it a neighborhood staple but a thriving catering business as well. With all of these adjustments, Kris garnered a lot of attention. His biggest accomplishment is being named a Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ recipient in 2021. Since then, Kris has competed on a tv show - Fire Master’s Canada Season 3 on the Food Network, named Top 50 Best restaurants by D Magazine in 2023 and a slew of news appearances, interviews, collaborations and events. Outside of work, Kris enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids. A fun fact most people may not know is that he is a long distance runner and has completed a few half marathons as well as one full marathon! The business can take up a lot of his time but it’s always been a priority of his to nurture what gives him the strength to keep it all going.
