Wyatt Fields has finally achieved his long-held dream to open a barbecue joint in his San Mateo County coastal hometown of El Granada — but it took a lot of patience during first the permitting process and then the pandemic. Breakwater is offering four smoked meats — prime brisket, pork ribs, pulled heritage-breed pork and smoked beef-and-pork sausage links made in-house — along with specials like June 7’s smoked chicken. Side dishes include apple cilantro slaw, beans, potato salad and cornbread with maple butter and smoked sea salt. For dessert there are slices of Texas Sheet Cake, a chocolate-and-pecan treat rarely seen in these parts; this version is made with rum, and the pecans are smoked. Walk-up takeout (with advance ordering online) is offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday from noon till 4 p.m. — or until they sell out.
